Task 1: Exercises-Typographic Systems & Type & Play

LECTURES

Advanced Typography: Typographic Systems

"All design is based on a structural system" and according to Elam, 2007, there are eight major variations with an infinite number of permutations. These eight major variations are as follows:
• Axial
• Radial
• Dilational
• Random
• Grid
• Modular
• Transitional
• Bilateral

1.Axial

Axial System: all elements are organised to the left or right of a single axis.

2. Radial

all elements are extended from a point of focus

3.Dilatational

all elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion

4.Random

elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship

5.Grid

a system of vertical & horizontal divisions

6.Transitional

an informal system of layered banding

7.Modular

a series of non-subjective elements that are constructed in as a standardised units

8.Bilateral

all text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis

task1 :exercise 2 (finding type)

We were asked to choose an image and analyze the font contained within it. The image could be of a man-made object, nature, or structure.

progress

The first picture I chose was a water wave. I find it hard when i tried to extract it . After a while, I forced myself to make a font from it. Next week, I received a feedback from Mr. Vinod to capture the characteristic of water.

After exploring the internet, I found a bamboo forest, and I think it's easier to extract a font from it. I have four letters: I, N, A, W. From these letters, I think Gill Sans Light is suitable.

FINAL LETTERFORM

After creating the font, I decided to make a poster with bamboo forest background

i think the font looks too simple, so I added a subtle bamboo texture and darkened the background to ensure the font stands out.

REFLECTION

Experience
I learned about design principles and how they apply to typography, and i improved my Adobe InDesign skills. Understanding grid systems was crucial, and lecture notes
In Exercise 1, Grids helped me align text and prioritize information. Designing the 'Random' layout was the easiest one because i can randomly place the text
Exercise 2 was harder because I struggled to trace images smoothly and refine fonts in Adobe Illustrator. Using a reference font made my work cleaner. and

Observations
I noticed that point size, weight, leading, and letter spacing significantly impact the overall design. Achieving a good balance between text and white space is crucial for an organized look. Bold text appears more important and draws attention first, so establishing text hierarchy is essential. Using grids helps keep the layout systematic and aligned. Font choice can guide the layout, and some fonts don’t work with certain designs.

In Exercise 2, tracing the image to extract letterforms is more effective than imitating them. Using a baseline ensures even letter levels, and a reference font is necessary for refining letterforms to make them smoother

Finding
i realize typography and advanced typography is different and we need to learn to be more professional and consider it from a designer's point of view. At the same time, in advanced typography, we learn more specialized knowledge of graphic design.
