Elements of design

  1. Point : Point is the simplest element of design, a repetitive mark forms a line , and point moves in space.
  2. Line : Line is can expressed a bunch of meaning depends on their patterns.
  3. Shape : Shape could form in 2 dimensional area or 3 dimensional object, visible depending on their apparent in colour, lightness and texture.
  4. Form : Form is a two dimensional area and a three dimensional, two dimensional area examples are painting, illustration or drawing while three dimensional examples is scluptors.
  5. Texture : Texture are refers to tactile qualities of surfaces.
  6. Space : Space is an empty space around us just like in drawings, paintings, prints and others.
  7. Color : Color are refers to lightness or darkness.

Elements of design are the individual “building blocks”

Principles of design

  1. Contrast
  2. Balance
  3. Emphasis
  4. Rules of third
  5. Repetition / Pattern / Rhythm
  6. Movement
  7. Hierarchy
  8. Alignment
  9. Harmony
  10. Unity

  1. e visual interest, emphasise a point and express content.

Gestalt Theory

  1. Gestalt principles are rules that describe hoe human eye recognize visual elements.
  2. The principles aim is to show how complex scenes can be reduced to more simple shapes
  3. These also explain how the eyes perceive shapes as a single, united form rather than separate simpler elements

Principle of Similarity

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nngroup.com%2Farticles%2Fgestalt-similarity%2F&psig=AOvVaw1qLqNLEX-Zb41zMnf6ZSGM&ust=1708786166101000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCPDCpdXawYQDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE

  1. Human eye perceive similar elements in a design as a complete picture, shape or group.
  2. Brain most likely to craft a link between elements of a similar nature

Principle of Continuation

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.smashingmagazine.com%2F2016%2F05%2Fimprove-your-designs-with-the-principles-of-continuation-and-common-fate-part-three%2F&psig=AOvVaw2e_JmFW81VFp9b4bOHVkUY&ust=1708786978563000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCMCJw9jdwYQDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE

  1. Human eye follows paths, lines, and curves of design and would rather watch a continuous flow of visual elements than separated objects.

Principle of Closure

  1. Human eye prefers to see complete shapes

Balances

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpin%2Fa-simple-guide-to-the-principles-of-design--477029785521881655%2F&psig=AOvVaw3DL_kjcM6TzthLEA3ynsU-&ust=1708787339444000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCLimxoTfwYQDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE

Harmony

  1. Selection of elements that share common trait
  2. Harmony becomes monotony without variety*
  3. Is the sense of all the elements of our design fit together. For example, theme, aesthetic style and mood

Unity

  1. Repetition of particular elements in design like colors, shapes, or materials.
  2. A sense of oneness
  3. Play distinct roles in the way we experience design

Scale and Proportion

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.sophia.org%2Ftutorials%2Fdesign-in-art-scale-and-proportion&psig=AOvVaw2Dyg1N_eB9YUJkyYOjTAGi&ust=1708787375345000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCNDA25XfwYQDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE

  1. Both are design elements that have to do with size
  2. Size of one object in relation to the other objects in design or artwork
  3. Parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object
  4. Use to depict or distract the ideal of design

Scale

  1. Size and dimension of figures and forms relative to specific unit of measure

  1. Vital part of design is imagery. That is why its important to use suitable and relevant images when designing
  2. Choosing right words to deepen the meaning of design. Suitable typeface putting it in strategic positioning result in visual hierarchy and balance in design

selected artwork

"dont let me go",by vera neokleous 2022,1929x2729
https://www.deviantart.com/lonesomebookworm/art/Don-t-Let-Me-Go-SDG-Life-Below-Water-1-918962998

so the UNSDG goals i have selected is life below water which is number 14 its aim to Oceans, oceans are super important for keeping nature healthy. When you support SDG 14, you're helping to take care of sea life, and that, in turn, keeps the whole Earth in good condition

what i observed in that artwork is there are plenty garbage such as plastic bag, plastic rope, plastic box in the underwater also there is a word that says "dont let me go" which means don't let rubbish into the ocean because it can harm underwater creature, If we look carefully we can imagine the plastic bag and plastic rope as jellyfish for the background its like moving because of the wave and shine

design principle:
-emphasis
-similarity
-movement
-asymetrical
-word&image
-contrast

week2: put link on each picture from the internet & add more words on selected art also make design principle point

REFLECTION

In my design class, we learned in two ways. First, we watched videos of Ms. Yip teaching us about design. Then, in practical classes, Mr. Zeon gave us tasks to do and helped us improve our work.

As I learned about design, I got better at understanding how things look good. I practiced what I learned by working on projects. This helped me understand how design works in real life.

After learning the basics, I started noticing design everywhere I went. I learned to pay attention to details like colors and shapes, even when I was just walking around.

The things I learned in class helped me become better at design. I learned how to spot patterns and make things look good. With the help of some extra reading materials, I was able to use what I learned in my own projects.
